Our Sustainability Mission

Whether it is helping our customers make healthier choices or working to make the way we do business more sustainable, we see this effort as part of Hy-Vee's overall mission of making people's lives easier, healthier, and happier.

Sustainable store construction at Hy-Vee

Store Construction and Design

While environmentally friendly store construction and design isn’t new to Hy-Vee, we are always striving to be better environmental partners. Through efficiency measures like solar panels and daytime lighting controls, plus the addition of more electrical vehicle charging stations at all our grocery stores fueling stations, we are working to reduce our footprint.

Sustainable product sourcing at Hy-Vee

Products, Product Sourcing, and Packaging

We’re committed to doing our part to reduce the number of single-use plastics in our stores. We’ve replaced our to-go containers with recyclable containers and we continue to search for sustainable packaging that works for our customers and the environment.

Sustainable Waste Reduction and Recycling at Hy-Vee

Waste Reduction and Recycling

Food waste and plastics are a big issue for grocery retailers across the country. We know that reducing waste and recycling are crucial to our sustainability efforts. Our retail stores are diverting 15 to 20 million pounds of food waste annually and our distribution centers are TRUE Zero Waste certified.

Sustainable Energy Conservation at Hy-Vee

Energy and Resource Conservation

We conserve energy and resources in a number of ways. Through LED lighting upgrades, store designs that harness natural light and use automated lighting controls, state of the art refrigeration systems, and enterprise energy management, we're minimizing our energy consumption.

Responsible Choice Seafood at Hy-Vee

Responsible Choice Seafood

Hy-Vee’s commitment to protect ocean resources is an integral part of our sustainability mission to do business in a manner that promotes the well-being of our customers, employees, communities, and the global environment.

Hy-Vee became the first Midwest retailer to source 100% of our fresh and frozen seafood from environmentally responsible sources in 2017. Responsible Choice seafood comes from sources, whether farmed or fished, that can maintain or increase production in the long term without jeopardizing the affected ecosystems.

Hy-Vee is proud to be the only retailer who has agreed to publish a list of our tuna supplier vessels, so everyone can view the vessels we use for our private label tuna and help us make sure they’re following sustainable, ethical practices. See the full report here.

Grimes Hy-Vee Grocery Store

Grimes Store

Our new Grimes store was built with sustainability in mind. We’ve gone above and beyond building codes to improve insulation, glazing and roofing, all of which will help reduce energy consumption. The Grimes location will also harness the power of the sun through solar panels on the Fast & Fresh. The main store features skylights that allow natural light to illuminate the aisles and daylight sensing dimmers to reduce energy consumption from our LED light fixtures. The Grimes store will also have several electric vehicle charging stations.
